Practical Ways to Improve School Attendance
• Are you looking to improve student attendance and punctuality?
• Are you looking for effective interventions and strategies?
If yes then this course is for you!
This practical course is designed for all those engaged with improving attendance and punctuality. With the use of current research, guidance and models of best practice we will provide you with practical suggestions to use straight away back at school as part of your improving attendance strategy. You will leave with a compressive toolkit of practical approaches proven to make a real positive difference to school attendance.
The course will be structured into four sessions:
Session 1: What research, guidance and best practice suggest
During this session we will consider the implications of research findings from the Education Endowment Foundation and government guidance on improving attendance in schools across all phases and sectors. There will be an opportunity for participants to share their own best practice and lessons learned from mistakes.
Session 2: A whole school approach to improving attendance
For any attendance strategy to be effective, it needs the skills, knowledge and support of every member of the school community. This session will examine effective strategies to engage school leaders, develop staff skills and awareness and engage the whole community in your drive to improve school attendance.
Session 3: Effective strategies for targeted individual interventions
Research suggests that the most effective attendance interventions are those that focus on the individual attendance barriers of specific learners. This session will provide a comprehensive toolkit of effective interventions to enable you to offer the best and most effective targeted support to each and every child at risk in your school.
Session 4: Working with parents to improve attendance
In order for learners to attend more regularly, we need to support and cooperation of parents and carers. This final session shares practical strategies to engage parents and carers in improving the attendance of their children alongside offering practical ideas for support when attendance issues escalate, to keep partnership working open.
• Understand what research and guidance tells us about best practice in supporting positive attendance;
• Explore the implications of key recommendations of best practice in improving attendance;
• Unpick the importance of whole school approaches to improving attendance and what this looks like in a variety of school contexts;
• Look at ways to apply a toolkit of practical strategies to improve attendance in a focused and targeted way;
• Develop a range of effective strategies to engage and empower parents and carers to support improved attendance for their children;
• Leave with a toolkit of strategies, approaches and ideas.
The target audience for this is those responsible for attendance in schools and academies; and any colleague who supports positive attendance in school.
