Course introduction

The It’s Ok Not to Be OK mental health awareness training is designed to give participants a toolkit of information, resources and practical strategies to support mental health and wellbeing as well as create an inclusive school where everyone feels safe and valued. Schools have a key role to play in supporting students to achieve their potential and improve their emotional wellbeing. Time will also be spent on recognising depression, self-harm, eating disorders and anxiety in children and young people and practical ways to support.

What we will cover throughout the day

  • Understand the types of mental health disorders including anxiety, depression, self-hard and eating disorders;

  • Recognise signs of mental health and take effective preventative action;

  • Follow a framework when faced with a student of member of staff who displays a mental health concern;

  • Look at ways to create an inclusive school which supports students and staff positive mental health;

  • Optimise student and staff wellbeing by providing effective support;

  • Practice ways to facilitate conversations around an individual’s mental health concern;

  • Identify ways to sign post, support and guide individuals to seek appropriate help and establish when to involve external agencies;

  • Optimise student wellbeing by providing effective support.

Target audience

Aimed at anyone who works directly or indirectly with students and who wants to help support student positive mental health. Ideal for school-based staff including teachers, head teachers, deputy headteacher, SENCO, special education teacher, school support staff, classroom assistant, educational psychologists, pastoral care staff and pastoral lead teacher.

As well as multi-disciplinary teams i.e. looked after children, foster care, adoption agencies, social services.
