Course introduction

Parent relations have never been more challenging. Over 90% of school leaders now report difficult interactions with parents and more than five million complaints were made to schools in the last year alone. WhatsApp groups, Facebook pages and social media threads are amplifying grievances faster than ever and the pressure on school leaders to respond confidently, consistently and lawfully has never been greater.

This practical, half-day course is designed for those who are managing the reality of parent conflict on the frontline. Drawing on the latest ASCL findings, Parentkind’s 2025 complaints data and the DfE-backed guidance released in early 2026, this course gives you a clear framework for de-escalating tension, handling formal complaints and taking back control of your school’s reputation online and off.

You’ll leave with practical tools you can use immediately, greater confidence in difficult conversations and a clearer understanding of where your professional boundaries lie and how to enforce them.

What we will cover throughout the day

  • Recognise the early warning signs of escalating parent conflict and apply proven de-escalation techniques to prevent situations from becoming formal complaints or safeguarding concerns.

  • Develop confidence in handling formal complaints, including managing meetings, understanding escalation routes and communicating decisions calmly and professionally.

  • Develop a school-wide approach to managing social media and WhatsApp groups, including when and how to respond, when to escalate and how to protect staff from online abuse.

  • Set and communicate clear, consistent boundaries around parent conduct including the use of behaviour agreements and restricted access in a way that is defensible, proportionate and trauma-informed.

  • Build personal resilience strategies to manage the emotional toll of sustained parent conflict, and know when and how to access support for yourself and your team.

Target audience

This course is designed for school leaders and staff who regularly manage challenging parent interactions, complaints and emotionally charged conversations. It is particularly relevant for Headteachers, Deputy and Assistant Headteachers, SENDCos/ALNCos, DSLs, pastoral leaders, behaviour and attendance leads, family liaison staff, school business managers, office managers and reception teams. The course is also suitable for governors and trust leaders involved in overseeing complaints procedures and parental conduct, as well as newly appointed leaders seeking greater confidence in managing conflict with parents and carers. Suitable for primary, secondary, special and alternative provision settings, the course provides practical strategies for anyone working on the frontline of parent communication and school reputation management.
