+ VAT Understanding attachment is fundamental to creating safe, nurturing and inclusive learning environments where every child can thrive. Children and young people with attachment needs may communicate distress through their behaviour, relationships and engagement with learning, making it essential for education professionals to recognise these needs and respond effectively.
This practical, evidence-informed 3 hour training will explore the impact of attachment on child development, behaviour and learning, while equipping participants with strategies to build secure relationships, promote emotional safety and create attachment-aware practice across their setting. Delegates will leave with practical approaches that can be implemented immediately to support pupils’ wellbeing, engagement and long-term success.
Develop an understanding of attachment theory and how early experiences influence behaviour, relationships and learning.
Recognise the signs of attachment needs and understand how they may present within educational settings.
Explore practical, attachment-aware strategies that support emotional regulation, resilience and positive behaviour.
Build confidence in responding to distressed behaviour with empathy, consistency and relational practice.
Identify ways to embed attachment-informed approaches across classrooms and the wider school culture to improve outcomes for children and young people.
This course is designed for headteachers, deputy headteachers and assistant headteachers with responsibility for behaviour, inclusion, SEND or pastoral care. It is also highly relevant for SENCOs and assistant SENCOs, designated safeguarding leads (DSLs) and deputy DSLs, pastoral leaders and managers, heads of year and key stage, behaviour and inclusion leads, class teachers, form tutors and early career teachers (ECTs). Teaching assistants, higher level teaching assistants (HLTAs), learning mentors, pastoral support staff, family support workers, home school link workers, alternative provision staff, specialist school practitioners, virtual school and looked after children (LAC) leads, educational psychologists, specialist advisory teachers, school mental health leads, and trust leaders with responsibility for inclusion, SEND, behaviour or wellbeing will also benefit from attending.

speaker and school improvement advisor, published author and founder of ‘Family
Matters’ empower...ment programme.
Kelly has worked systemically with some of the most challenging communities,
helping families thrive in difficult circumstances. She advises in the development of
staff wellbeing to improve teacher retention and embeds purposeful strategies to
support School Leader’s emotional health. Kelly is an advocate for Senior Mental
Health Leads and helps drive school development processes forward, whilst creating
outstanding outcomes and awards for many organisations. She is a trailblazer within
the Wellbeing Lead Network for supporting pastoral teams. Her work is recognised
by the DfE, NCB, The Anna Freud Centre and The Education Support Partnership as
a lead influencer of mental health and wellbeing in education.
Kelly is currently leading on the DFE Wellbeing for Education Return Programme
within Kent County Council.
